Mt. Carstensz Pyramid Print This Page

Carstensz Pyramid is the most mysterious of the Seven Summits. Rising from the dense tropical jungle of West Papua, reaching the base of the mountain is a major challenge in itself. This remoteness, combined with government restrictions, political instability in the region and frequent tribal warring, has meant that few people have climbed it since the first ascent in 1961. It is undoubtedly one of the most adventurous, exciting and uncertain trips that you can do.

It is true that the expedition is wrought with difficulty, wrought with the potential for political upheaval and for last minute itinerary changes. It is essential that you approach this challenge with a high degree of flexibility, as it is normal for dates and itineraries to change. However, if you are looking for a real adventurers trip, undeterred by the bureaucracy and uncertainty of Indonesian politics, Carstensz defines organised 'adventure travel' at its most audacious.

Day 1-3 : 14 Peak Expedition staff will meet you at the airport. You will transfer to your hotel.

Day 4 : We wrap-up last minute paperwork and secure our permit with the Indonesia government. You will have the opportunity to explore the ocean front city of Dempassar. We connect for our flight to West Papua and transfer to our hotel.

Day 5 : We'll get an early start for the helicopter flight to "The Lakes" Base Camp.

 Day 6-7 : Acclimazation

Day 8 ( Summit Day) : We're off to the summit! The route is relatively straightforward and follows a line up the north face. After scrambling approximately 500 meters over mostly solid rock we will break out on the summit ridge where lines will be fixed in preparation for our descent. Our route here follows the ridge crest with grand exposure along the way. We pass four small notches as we rappel and use ascenders to negotiate these tricky sections. Our descent entails multiple rappels and scrambling. We will be on good, clean rock that provides excellent friction even in wet weather. This will be a long, difficult day of 12-18 hours roundtrip.

Day 9-11 : These extra days are to allow for a better weather window or extra days for acclimatization if needed.

Day 12 : We fly back to Timika and have our celebratory dinner.

Day 13 : Depart

Day 14 : Arrive back home.
